What are NGSS Practices?
The NGSS defines eight Science & Engineering Practices describing what scientists actually do. They are skill standards, not content standards. Science communication maps directly to four of them.
Asking Questions and Defining Problems
Students formulate questions that can be investigated and define problems that can be solved through engineering.
The Discovery Hub helps students explore current research and coverage across scientific disciplines, sparking curiosity and helping them formulate meaningful questions grounded in real-world science.
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
Students construct explanations for phenomena and design solutions to problems using evidence and scientific reasoning.
The Communication Gym trains students to construct clear, evidence-based explanations of scientific concepts for diverse audiences through structured coaching frameworks.
Engaging in Argument from Evidence
Students use evidence to support or refute claims, distinguishing between opinions and evidence-based arguments.
Source verification in the Discovery Hub and response frameworks in the Communication Gym teach students to evaluate claims, identify misinformation, and construct evidence-based arguments.
Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
Students obtain and evaluate scientific information from multiple sources and communicate findings clearly to different audiences.
This is the core of what Fervae does. The Discovery Hub supports obtaining and evaluating information from peer-reviewed research and science coverage. The Communication Gym and publishing tools support communicating that information to real audiences.
